Following the posting of bail near a L.A. area lockup, Hickmen spent a recent evening with their newly freed bird, Johnny, discussing current foreign policy options and German art. Shortly after the below photo was taken, Tim and Jones made the wise decision to bail (more like evacuate), leaving Johnny and Finn no choice but to drink 672 beers each. They wrote The Greatest Song The World Has Known sometime around 4am. Sadly, neither could remember a thing the next morning. Hopefully the band will remember more than that Friday, the 26th of January, at The Press in Claremont. Jack Fris' Radio Choir will play at 9 (and fuck all their families, too..), and the Hickmen will play at 10. Four months ago they played 18 songs over 2 hours accompanied by innovators and mavericks Chris Darrow and Jeff Ross (called value added in the manufacturing industry...maybe you've heard of it) for most of the set. Who knows (odds are they don't) what they have up their sleeve for The Press on the 26th. In recording news, the Hickmen have recorded the accordion tracks for the new CD. Their friend Lee Stein handled the chore. They also have an extra track or two nearing drop at this site. "The Democrats are taking over...run and hide!" - GWB A gig! Sort of. Alan's in London, Tim's in Australia, and Finn and Jones are... at Highland Grounds, Wednesday, November 22 at 8pm. The pair will be playing stripped down versions of songs on the new Hickmen CD. They'll also be backing up Hickmen friend Jack Fris during his set. Mr. Fris may return the favor. The whole thing will be done by 9pm and you can get back to your turkey, or whatever. Highland Grounds, 742 N. Highland, all ages, $5 cover. Speaking of new songs, the recording of The Hickmen's 3rd CD is continuing. Coach Jones is managing the team and making sure all the tracks are 110% of what they can be. Look for a spring release, but we'll keep you posted. AFTERTHOUGHTS The hospitality was delivered by Robin, The Press Crew, and a very enthusiastic crowd. Carlos began the evenings entertainment by drawing from is two inch thick (500 pages?) folder of songs, bringing us all stories in song, covering a century of American blues. He was joined by famed guitarist Jeff Ross. The Hickmen followed, and were quickly joined by another Inland Empire legend, Chris Darrow on mandolin. Jeff Ross, joined an hour into the hour forty five minute set. Carlos joined with a new and improved chorus for Costco Socks. Lovely Mayhem ensued.
Summer 2006 The Hickmen have spent their
summer working on new tracks for their third CD, tentatively titled "Welcome to
California." Tracks at or near completion include Nowhere Grind, Where I Stand,
No One Cried, Walk Out West, Rock and Roll Heart, APRIL 18 UPDATE
HICKMEN Gigging (giggling) APRIL 22 and MAY 24 March 31 UPDATE Hickmen is alive and well, holed up in the caves and underground passages that span from Hollywood to Silverlake. Reports from Homeland Security sources indicate a range of sonic activities. CIA analysts are suggesting they are from the uncorking of fine champagnes, the voice of Oscar, kick and snare, sirens and screams (4 octaves) a guitar tone that is driving toxic percolates out of the local aquifers... Hickmen Return to the HIGH Desert Friends, this is going to be a great weekend. We are playing Saturday night, last I heard. Note the mega fantastic line-up for fri/sat. Make a weekend of it. Pitch a tent, or a van or the SUV (don't forget to load up at Costco on the way out; gas, munchies, travel insurance, casket) at Pappi and Harriet's site. Get up early and visit your Joshua Tree National Monument.
Hickmen Roll Through the West Coast More on this later...but the low down is that mid-August mileage was up, as the band ventured to Portland, San Francisco and San Luis Obsipo (with stop overs in Redding and Winters). We can't wait to get back. Hickmen Shut OUT OF Highland Grounds It quickly became apparent that the live beauty provided by the Hickmen had been replaced by a 'full' bar, fresh coat of paint and nice black table cloths. Hard to argue. The Hickmen have vowed to shave and replace their levi's with red satin in an effort to gain entrance. Hell, you can't wear denim at the country club either. July 7, 2005 The Hickmen have shut down Highland Grounds. Rich Brenner, asserting that there is no way to make a profit with the tightfisted crowd The Hickmen draw, has booted live music from his venue. Sad but true. The last Thursday for The Hickmen will be July 21. So hey, cry you bastards and get on down and see them. The 21st will have Carlos Guitarlos and his band, just one week after their new CD release. Their may be surprise artist (or two) as well. If nothing else, come on down to give Lou-oui and Rick a proper send-off to the unemployment line. Also, you Hickmen fans up the west coast, look for August dates to be announced soon. Confirmed venues so far include San Luis Obispo, San Fransisco, Chico, and Portland. Check back here for more info. April 9, 2005
According to reports, Mike Finn is "100% pre-op" female, while Alan Waddington has lost what was left of his mental capacities to the marching snare. Mike Jones, grumbling about what he claims to be "typical lead singer bullshit" and Tim Allyn are vowing no more Hickmen gigs until both situations are "normalized," what ever that may be...
Whatever that may be, the line up at Highland Grounds this month is a benefit for the Silverlake Independent Jewish Community Center preschool. Raffles, requests for donations, and other money-leeching activities will be in the house. The door remains $5. The line up is all SIJCC parents: Ben Decter and Jackie Sloan, Autumn De Wilde, the Holliston String Quartet, Barry Jacobson and Peter Freiberger, and, sex change or not, The Hickmen. Show starts at a parent-friendly 7:30, and ends early too, though not early enough for some of you... |
